ChatGPT Ads for B2B SaaS: What We Know and Whether to Test

OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in February 2026. Here is what it has said about how they work, who sees them, how they differ from being cited in answers, and whether a B2B SaaS team should test them yet.

What OpenAI has said

In January 2026 OpenAI published its approach to advertising in ChatGPT, and in February 2026 it began testing ads with some users in the US. Based on OpenAI's own post and reporting at the time, these are the main points:

  • Ads appear below an answer, are labelled as sponsored and are kept separate from the answer itself.
  • OpenAI says ads do not influence what ChatGPT answers, and that conversations are not shared with advertisers.
  • The first test covered logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans in the US. Users under 18 are excluded.
  • Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans don't show ads.
  • Ads are matched to the topic of the conversation.

The details are changing quickly, including which countries are included and how advertisers can buy. Check OpenAI's current documentation before planning a test.

Why this matters less for B2B than it sounds

The plans that don't show ads (Business, Enterprise and the paid individual plans) are exactly the ones many professional buyers use at work. So the audience seeing ads skews toward free consumer users. That doesn't rule ChatGPT ads out for B2B, especially for products bought by founders, freelancers and small teams, but it's a reason to test small and measure carefully.

Ads vs being cited in the answer

There are now two ways to appear in ChatGPT: being named or cited in the answer itself, and paying for an ad below it. They work very differently.

  • Cited in the answer: earned through clear pages, consistent brand facts and mentions on trusted sites. It shows to every user, on every plan, and carries the assistant's implied recommendation. See how to get cited by ChatGPT and AI citations.
  • ChatGPT ad: bought, labelled as sponsored and shown only to some users. Useful for reach and testing messages, but it doesn't make the assistant recommend you.

For most SaaS companies, the first job is still the organic one. If ChatGPT recommends three competitors and not you, an ad below that answer is fighting the answer. Fix your AI share of voice first, then consider ads as an extra.

Who should test ChatGPT ads

  • Good fit: products sold to founders, freelancers, small businesses and prosumers, where buyers are likely to use free ChatGPT.
  • Possible fit: mid-market tools with a clear, common problem people ask about, if you can track conversions properly.
  • Poor fit for now: enterprise products sold to large buying committees, whose users mostly sit on ad-free business plans.

How to run a sensible first test

  1. Check you're named correctly in organic answers first, and fix any wrong facts about your brand.
  2. Pick one or two clear problems your product solves, matching how people phrase questions in ChatGPT.
  3. Send clicks to a dedicated landing page with one offer, built like your paid search pages.
  4. Track conversions to qualified leads or sign-ups, not just clicks. Tag the traffic with consistent UTM parameters.
  5. Set a fixed test budget and a decision date. Compare cost per qualified lead with Google Search and LinkedIn.

What to watch next

Ads inside AI assistants are new, and the formats, targeting and buying options will change. Google is also showing ads in and around its AI features. The safest strategy is the one that works whatever happens to ad formats: be the brand AI tools name when buyers ask. Our AI search optimization guide covers the full plan, and our AEO service is how we run it for clients.

Quick quiz

ChatGPT ads: check what you know

Three questions based on what OpenAI has said.

  1. 1. Where do ChatGPT ads appear?

  2. 2. Which users were not shown ads in the first test?

  3. 3. For most B2B SaaS companies, what should come before ChatGPT ads?

Frequently asked questions

  • No. OpenAI says ads don't influence answers. Ads appear separately and are labelled. Being named in the answer is earned.

  • The first test was US-only. Reports since then describe expansion to more countries. Check OpenAI's current documentation for where ads run today.

  • Not yet for most B2B SaaS. Run a small, separate test and compare cost per qualified lead before moving any budget.

  • Anthropic has said it plans to keep Claude ad-free. Visibility in Claude, like other assistants, comes from being a source it trusts.
