Site architecture
Also called Site structure
Site architecture is how a website's pages are organised and linked together, from the homepage down to individual articles. A clear structure helps visitors and search engines find and understand every page.
What good architecture looks like
- Important pages are no more than three clicks from the homepage.
- Related pages are grouped under clear hubs, such as services or a blog topic.
- URLs reflect the structure: /services/seo, /glossary/indexing.
- Breadcrumbs show where each page sits.
Why it matters
Structure tells search engines which pages matter most and how topics relate, which supports topical authority and helps new pages get found quickly.
Frequently asked questions
Flatter is usually better: fewer clicks to key pages, while still grouping related content logically.
Compare your sitemap with a crawl of your internal links; pages in the sitemap that nothing links to are orphans.
