Mobile-first indexing
Mobile-first indexing means Google mainly uses the mobile version of a page to index and rank it, even for searches made on a desktop.
What it means for your site
- Content, headings and links must be the same on mobile as on desktop.
- Structured data and metadata must appear on the mobile version too.
- Images need alt text on mobile as well.
- Pages must be fast and usable on a phone.
Quick check
Open your key pages on a phone. If anything important is hidden, cut or hard to use, Google sees the same limitation.
Frequently asked questions
