Content and on-page SEO
Title tag
Also called Meta title, SEO title
A title tag is the HTML element that sets a page's title, shown as the clickable headline in search results and in the browser tab.
How to write one
- Keep it under about 60 characters so it isn't cut off.
- Put the main keyword near the start.
- Make each page's title unique.
- Add your brand at the end on most pages.
- Write for the click: say what the reader will get.
Why it matters
The title is one of the strongest on-page signals of what a page is about, and it's the first thing searchers read when deciding where to click.
Frequently asked questions
Not always. Google may rewrite titles it thinks don't match the page; clear, accurate titles are rewritten less.
No. The title tag appears in search results; the H1 is the main heading on the page. They can be similar but needn't match.
